How to vape discreetly while travelling

When you travel as a vaper, you run into a different set of rules at every stop. Airlines, hotels, holiday rentals and countries all have their own. This guide sorts out what's fixed and what isn't, and how to keep a low profile from the departure hall to your hotel room.

Let's get the hard rules out of the way first.

You never vape on a plane. Every airline bans it, and the consequences can be serious: fines, diversion costs, even a ban from the airline. A filter changes nothing about that, and Fumigo is not meant for it.

Your vape travels in your hand luggage. Devices with batteries aren't allowed in checked bags. That's an aviation safety rule, not advice. Pods and liquids fall under the normal liquid rules.

And the law differs from country to country. A handful of countries restrict vaping or ban it completely. Five minutes of checking before you fly saves you an awkward chat at customs.

Where vaping is allowed, from your hotel balcony to a rental's garden or a terrace, is where being considerate actually pays off.

At home you know where you can vape without anyone minding. Abroad, every place is a guess. Is this terrace fine with it? Is the Airbnb host strict? It's the visible cloud that gets you noticed. Take away the cloud and most of the smell, and most of those questions stop mattering, because you're not asking anyone to put up with anything.

It can also save you money. Hotels and rentals may charge a cleaning fee if a room smells of smoke or vapour. Keeping the smell out of the fabrics is cheaper than arguing about a charge at checkout.

One small item makes the whole trip easier, and that's a personal exhale filter. After each puff you breathe out through it. The filter holds on to the aerosol droplets, so there's barely a visible puff and little scent left behind.

Fumigo was made with trips like this in mind. It has no battery, so there's nothing to charge, and nothing extra to think about at security. It fits in the same pocket as your passport. One unit lasts up to 100 puffs, which is about a weekend away, and a 3-pack comfortably covers a two-week holiday. It's disposable, so you throw the used one out before your flight home. It comes in blue or black and doesn't draw a second look.

It also works with any vape, because it only handles your exhale and doesn't attach to the device.

At the airport vaping indoors is banned almost everywhere, though some airports have smoking areas. Outside the terminal, breathing out through the filter means no cloud drifting over the taxi queue.

In a hotel room, check the house rules first, since plenty of hotels count vaping as smoking. Where it's allowed, use the filter and open a window, so the room stays fresh. There's a full guide on vaping in a hotel room.

In an Airbnb or other rental the same applies as in a hotel, with one extra: reviews work both ways. If the place smells fresh when you leave, everyone's happy.

Out and about, on terraces, squares and beaches, the rules and the unwritten norms change from country to country. Where vaping is allowed, a filtered exhale means nobody at the next table gets your cloud. Where it isn't, put it away.
